Parenting Tips: Celebrate Your Child’s Uniqueness
Just like a snowflake or a fingerprint, every child is unique in their own very special way. Each child has a unique way of feeling, thinking, and interacting with other people.
Some children are shy, while others are assured; some are energetic, while others are relaxed; some are nervous, while others are happy-go-lucky. As a loving and supportive parent, it’s your job to help them to deal with their uniqueness and celebrate their individual qualities.
Allow your daughter or son to articulate themselves through their interests. They may find a artistic expression in theatre, dancing or painting, or they may be exceptionally talented in the sciences or sports. Help them to embrace what they like to do, what interests them, and what makes them happy. Help them realize that they should not worry about being ‘just like everyone else.’
Help your daughter or son to make positive options, and compliment them for good acts, behaviors and positive qualities they possess. Spur them on to be actively involved in their neighborhood, and try activities that develop a sense of working together and achievement.
You need to be resolute yet even-handed when issuing chastisement for misdeeds or bad behavior, and make sure the rules and repercussions for breaching the rules are clearly understood. Show a cooperative, caring and united front with your partner when it comes to discipline.
Recognize and celebrate your son or daughter’s uniqueness. Never forget that your daughter or son is an individual. Permit your child to have his or her own personal preferences and feelings, which may not be the same as own.
And lastly, help your daughter or son to be true to themselves by doing the same. Display to your daughter or son how to make positive choices with the choices you make, and that nobody is without fault and anyone can make mistakes. Teach your daughter or son that mistakes can be a great learning episode, and that they should not be crestfallen or embarrassed about making them.
Remember to lead by example. Be the very best role model you can be for your daughter or son.
